Emergency Romance – ER 8
"No........." Susie stood in shock. "NO!!!" She grabbed the paddles and continuously shocked the body. Keith's body bounced up and down from the shocks. The scared nurses went to find another doctor, to tell him that Susie had gone crazy.
Susie didn't know if she was crazy or not. All she wanted was to save her lover. Even though they had fought and he had never told her that he loved her, she still wanted to save him. He still owed her an e-card. He couldn't die! He mustn't die! Susie threw away the paddles and began to pound at his heart. She then pressed against his chest with all her strength. She wanted him to cry out and say, "Ouch! You are hurting me." But he remained motionless. He just lay there with his eyes closed, as if punishing her with his silence.
Just then Dr Chew appeared. He pushed Susie away from the operating table. By that time, Susie couldn't see clearly anymore. Her vision had been blurred by her tears. She was crying. She was wailing. She was bemoaning until no more sound came out of her mouth.
"It's too late, Dr Wu. He's already dead. I'm sorry." Dr Chew patted her on the shoulder. He knew Keith. He had once commented that both of them were made for each other.
"He can't die." Susie shook her head. "He can't die!!" and pushed her way towards Keith.
"Dr Wu, control yourself!" Dr Chew slapped her. "I understand what you're going through but you're a doctor."
Yes, she was a doctor but she was also an ordinary woman with emotions. And what's the use of being a doctor when she couldn't even save the person she loved most? Besides, he still owed her a card.
"I want him to live! I want him to live!" She broke free and ran to Keith again and tried to knock the life back into his body. Though Keith remained lifeless, tears flowed down his cheeks from the corner of his eyes.
"Take her away!" instructed Dr Chew. That day, Susie lost her calm and her professionalism. But worst of all, she lost her Keith.
Later, she found out from a co-worker, who was with him that afternoon, that after she hung up on him, Keith had tried in vain to call her. Worried, he sped towards the hospital in his bike and got hit by a truck on the way. When Susie heard that, she froze. Her tantrum had killed him. Just because of an e-card that she didn’t receive, he died. Her childishness had terminated their relationship prematurely for good.
Susie, who had given a week off work to recover from her grief, decided to check her mailbox one afternoon. Somehow, that thought had been haunting her since Keith's demise. True enough, there were unread mails and not just one or two but more than a hundred of them. There was also an 'Error Message' from her Internet server. She clicked on it.
"Due to an overwhelming usage on Valentine's Day, we could not deliver your mails until today. We apologise for the delay and for any inconvenience caused."
Susie looked at the rest of the mails which seemed to be from one sender. Her heart began to throb faster. Could Keith have sent them?
With a trembling hand, she opened the first mail. The first thing that popped up was a gorgeous red rose. Then a familiar song began to play. 'No Promises'. It was Susie's favourite song. The rose was beautiful and the song was lovely but the most touching of all were the words underneath the rose.
Susie dear,
Having known you for so long, I've never given you any flower. Today I send you a rose. I know I have made you mad by the things I say and do. I want to say to you: I'm Sorry and I Love You.
I also want to tell you a good news. I have finally saved enough money. I've started saving since I first saw you at the hospital, three years ago. I was afraid to confess my love for you because I wasn't sure if I would be able to provide you with the good life that you deserve. But now that I've saved enough, we don't have to wait anymore. Today, I would like to use this card to propose to you. Will you marry me, dear? Will you?
Susie kept reading his words till her tears wetted the keyboard. She then moved the cursor over to the ‘Reply’ box, clicked on it and typed the respond – 'I will.' Next, she clicked on the 'Send' button.
She went on to open every single one of the remaining mail, accepting every single rose, reading every single word and replying to every single proposal with 'I will'. She also listened to 'No Promises' a hundred times but she knew that Keith had kept his promises till the very end.
